Question

Help answer this question below.

Why do so many atheists on AB think of themselves as theologists able to enlighten the community on God,scriptures and religion in general?

To me it is like a person who has decided to become a couch potato answering questions on exercise and bodybuilding !

    LOL, I love your analogy.

I think the Atheist, do research or may have studied religion, as a way to debate the religious people on here.

I hear what your saying, I'm so tired of the whole religion war thing. I have stated in a recent comment in another question that I'm just tired of people trying to force their beliefs on everyone else, because no one really knows what happens when you die.

Personally it's because I was a christian 20 years - and an atheist for 8 years.
When a christian I was always asking - trying to find out what was true and what was not. I both believed and wanted to believe.

Now I don't, but am fascinated with people who do - all sorts of gods - not just the christian one. I'm also keen on pointing out the faulty logic, inaccurate science, non-factual 'facts' and so on people continually trot out to support their position.

Actually, it's more like someone who used to be a couch potato and turned to exercise and bodybuilding, answering questions about why it's a bad idea to be a couch potato.

Personally, I used to be a Christian. Turning to atheism was a big decision so I read up a lot before I did. As a result, I ended up more familiar with the Bible and other writings than most Christians. I understand how that can be annoying :)

In that case I can assume you don't know much about atheists. Many atheists, myself included, can only become so after a long period of contemplating religion and the idea of God. It took me about ten years. I have put a lot of effort into it, so it would be only natural that I would come away with some understanding of theology. A theist, on the other hand, does not have much motivation to contemplate God. They already have their answer, so why continue to ask questions? So, you're analogy doesn't fit.

That like saying the Republican Party can't know anything about the Democratic Party. I have spoken to many atheists that know more about religion then many theists, just as I have met many biologists that know more about chess then many chess players.

Just because a person fits into one category, it doesn’t mean they are complete ignorant of other aspects of life, or knowledge in general.

I would say it is because many atheists studied different religions in their search for truth. Also from what I have seen, many of them seem to know and understand scripture better than those who profess to following them.

AB is an asylum run by the inmates, ciao!

Because most atheists here on Answerbag know a great deal more about religious dogma than most of the self deluded faithful do.

We are in a far better position to discuss religion objectively than people who are under the deleterious influence of the meme sets of religion.

Because atheists usually have actually researched the subject matter, as opposed to those who think they're automatically an expert just because they joined the club.

I don't think they so much are trying to enlighten you about God or scriptures as much as they are trying to help you learn how to use reason and logic.

Many atheists I talk to are atheists not because they don't know religion, but because they have actually studied religions and have found them all to be fallacious.

Funny that. My experience is the opposite. That quite a lot of the theists posting here appear to have never actually read the bible, or learned anything about it beyond the catchphrases used to power various crusades.

The question contains a fallacy. An atheist who is well-informed on religion is indeed quite able to enlighten believers about God, scriptures, and religion. There is no requirement that one be a believer in order to have a solid understanding of mythology.

You could say that correcting this kind of defective logic is an example of a place where atheists can offer some enlightenment, in fact.

Just because you don't /believe/ in something doesn't mean you can't be /knowledgeable/ about it. I'm very intrigued by religion and like learning a lot about it even though I don't belong to one myself, and I definitely like talking about it and answering questions about it.
If you're talking about the smartasses, usually you get a smartass answer to a smartass question; like this one. ;P

I'm not sure you need to believe in the Minotaur to comment on it's likelyhood. Can only people that believe in dragons comment on their existence?

Does a christian have no comment on the matters of Zeus or Osiris? Christian theologians had much to say on the subject of other peoples Gods, clearly theologians did not draw this distinction.

So why are atheists becoming proactive? Not sure. Out of interest maybe, or passion. I was interested enough in the planet to do a degree in geology, which I think looking back was an extention of my desire to understand things pertaining to 'meaning'. After studying a subject relating to the entire history of the planet it is a natural step to come and see whether the arguments here can add anything, or whether they are simply not up to the job by comparison.
