Bradley, If you aren't feeling good when you start singing, then something may be wrong with your throat, i.e. an illness. Have you gone to an ear, nose, throat specialist? Also, are you taking lessons from someone or are you simply doing what you hear singer's do on the radio? Singer's on the radio are heavily miked--they don't sing full voice. Also, a lot of them get their recordings 'corrected' by the recording companies before their songs go to print.
You might not want to hear this, but I would recommend studying with a classical--and I double underline classical--trained voice teacher who teaches classical voice. People who have classically trained voices are taught and can teach others how to take care of their voice. Many popular musicians destroy or ruin their voices after a couple of years because of the way they are singing. If you are taking from a voice teacher and they are telling you to do things that hurt your voice, here's the best bit of advice I could ever give you: run. Don't look back. A good classical teacher can be found through a local university. If the professors are too busy or are too expensive, take from a doctoral student or a graduate student who actually can train you classically.
