Why does our 25yr old room mate piss in cups/bottles?

I'm a 26 yr old male with a 20 yr old live in girlfriend. Our 25 yr old male friend lives with us in our spare bedroom to help with bills and rent. He is very lazy. All he does is play video games, work, eat, sleep and go to the bars to get drunk. We are relatively neat but don't have draconian rules or expectations.

All his clothes, clean or dirty, are thrown in heaps on the bedroom floor. He has two closets with plenty of room and won't use them. He leaves soda cans, bowls, plates, and cups all over his room when he is done with them. He WILL NOT throw them away unless I tell him so many times (over a week or two) that I eventually have to be rude about it.

We've been friends since childhood and get along great besides these things.

Today, I checked his room to make sure he cleaned it like he told me he did. I opened one of the cabinets and low and behold there were 4 20oz cups and 4 20oz plastic bottles all full of URINE.

The bathroom is literally 5 feet away through his bedroom door and through the bathroom door. That's it.

What is the problem? Does he have some type of issue or is he really just that damn lazy?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

I'd have to tell him to shape up or ship out. You'd be better to lose him as a roommate and keep him as a friend. You could rent the room to numerous other people.

He's marking his territory. If it becomes a problem you could put some effort into training him. Simply show him where the proper place to "do his business" is, and perhaps show him, yourself, what he is supposed to do there. Every time he does it right, give him a reward, like a biscuit.

By the way, I've never met a man named Amanda, before...

Well you said it yourself. He's lazy. But this goes way beyond just laziness in my humble opinion. He could be a garbage hoarder. I would have moved long ago. The whole piss in the cups in the cabinets thing is just nasty.

He might need alot of counseling. If you haven't seen the show yet, I'd recommend checking out Hoarders on A&E.

Also do a random search for photos of hoarders - you'll see how bad it could get.

There may be some reason, like he wants to save up to pass a drug test, or maybe he thinks someone is poisoning him. Could he be getting so high he can't get off the couch? Yes, it's weird, I think.

Sucks living with a pig -- on the other hand, if he pays the rent -- that's a good thing. I'd bet you could find a better room mate that also pays the rent.

I can identify with your roommate a little -- I'm very bad with closets and organizing stuff -- piles work for me okay.

The piss is an odd one -- maybe he feels he lacks privacy, or doesn't want to go "all the way" to the bathroom during the night -- or maybe he has an incontinence problem and can't deal with it accept in this strange way. I doubt this is about being lazy -- he is probably depressed.

I'd take it like a red flag -- you probably shouldn't have gone in his room -- so you can't hold this against him -- but I think you should give him notice, and I'd make up a lie that a family member was coming for a few months, and you and hubby want some alone time before they show up.

That URL in your description is dead.
