Question

Help answer this question below.

How would you catch a feral cat in order to provide medical help?

There are a few cats in my neighborhood that I feed. 2 I can pet and 2 won't run when I'm close but won't let me try to pet them either.
The one looks like she's had an abscess under her chin and I'd like to put medicine on it.
Any Suggestions?

Get a live trap from your humane society. If you want to catch the cat to help it but not take them to the humane society just tell them you are trying to catch a mother cat and when you return the cage say you couldn't get her.

Your best bet is the Humane Society or Animal Control.

Cats are smart, but they need to eat. A humane trap (which you should be able to borrow free of charge from either) set with food will usually do the trick. If you call Animal Control, they'll keep the cat unless you choose to foster or adopt it.

Feral cats are hard to deal with. Some or just unsociable, some are truly wild and can inflict harm. They're also not usually looked upon with great sympathy. If you can trap the cat or have it trapped, it could be tranquilized by a vet and treated...at your own cost.

It's good you're trying to do a good thing. Good luck.

Shoot the damn thing. Have you no idea how much damage these animals wreak upon native wildlife? They are vermin, and should be treated as such. In Australia, there are many species on the verge of extinction thanks to the introduction of these voracious pests that might appeal to soft-hearted old ladies, but are ruthless predators that kill for mere amusement rather than need.

If you do catch it (feral, live trap) I wouldn't "put medicine on it". Peroxide is a big fat no-no, Neosporin won't fix the problem. It needs to be drained (by a professional, ie: a veterinarian), and then infused with something like Animax which is similar to Neosporin, but isn't. Take the cat to a veterinarian otherwise you'll probably just end up harming him/her even worse.
