You say no handbook when you were hired. Was a handbook distributed to employees after you were hired? Were you ever given one or did you have access to one? If you truly were fired and were given a "cause of dismissal" that was an infraction stated in an employee handbook which you had no access to, you may have been wrongfully terminated, regardless of whether your state is employment at will or even if you worked under a contract. Discuss with an attorney in your state. This is not legal advice, just my opinion. (but an educated one)

"The employment "at will" doctrine means that an employee who does not have an employment contract for a specific duration can be discharged for any reason or no reason at all. "At will" is justified as a two way street. It permits either the employee or the employer to sever the employment relationship without incurring liability. Many employers use employee handbooks to communicate policy. In circumstances where the handbook specifies discipline and discharge processes the handbook may be deemed an enforceable contract and modify the "at will" doctrine."

Yeah, they don't need to do any of that.

What did they fire you for?

You can be fired for any reason at any time as long as it isn't related to race or creed.

You need to explain what your were accused of before one can post a rational answer to your question.
For instance, most employee hand books don't say anything about pissing on the secretary, but anyone with common sense would know that.

Employee handbooks are not a legal requirement. It is their company they can run it anyway the like. You did not say what you got fired for?

You're more than likely an at-will employee, so they can fire you for being on time, if they chose to.
