  • She may have a bladder condition that doesn't allow her time to get to the bathroom once she feels the sensation. In older people, this is called urgency incontinence. Kiegel(?) exercises have been prescribed in some cases to help strengthen the muscles surrounding the bladder. Also have her practice "holding it"...then while urinating, have her stop the stream, hold it for a few seconds, then start again. Certain foods, especially caffeinated, carbonated beverages, or artificial sweeteners, can aggravate urgency incontinence. Is she urinating frequently? She may have an underdeveloped bladder. Does she sleep through the night without having to get up to go to the bathroom or having an accident? A urologist may be helpful. There are also medications that can be prescribed for children. To help reduce the amount of laundry I'm sure you're doing, you might try using some of the bladder control pads, like POISE, but your daughter may have to be reminded to change them often, as they could lead to urinary tract infections.
  • I agree with the above answer, certainly check with your doctor. Another factor to consider is just plain stubborness. Some children will simply refuse to do it because they know its getting them lots of attention from you and that you will "take care of the situation" each time it happens. Is your child in school, or an institution outside of the home? Putting the child in a more "public" environment should change things if its a case of stubborness. She will soon learn to use the bathroom because she is in a more public environment where things are not quite as cozy as they were at home. She probably won't be comfortable having someone other than you or your spouse deal with this issue. It will also cause embarrasment among her peers when she soils her clothes and has to tell an adult about it. I've seen many kids who "almost" have the hang of potty training, and then get complete control of it once they begin to spend extended periods of time away from Mommy and Daddy. Good luck!
