    Great Answer

    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

    External Hard Drives

Call Dish Network at 800-333-3473 to activate the external hard drive feature of your receiver ($39 activation fee; supported models only in August 2010). Expand your DVR's recording capacity with this feature. However, it is not possible to copy your Dish DVR recordings for playback on a personal computer. Each time the hard drive is connected to a new device, you are prompted to reformat the drive, which results in a complete loss of data.

    PocketDISH

Transfer your DVR recordings to a PocketDISH device for mobile viewing. With the Dish ViP922 SlingLoaded DVR, you can use Dish Remote Access to watch the content of your DVR remotely on your PC or other compatible mobile device. For more information about the PocketDISH and ViP922, contact Dish Network at 800-333-3474.

You can also watch your recordings and live TV on a computer or supported mobile device as long as you have Internet access. The 922 receiver has a built in Sling device giving it access to this feature as long as the receiver is connected via broadband. The 722 or 722k receiver can access the same features with a Sling Adapter connected and broadband connection. As stated above, you cannot transfer the recording from your DVR or external hard drive to your computer due to different computer languages. External hard drives will work on like receivers. If you get a replacement receiver, 722 or 722k, the external hard drive can be used with the new receiver without reformatting and losing the recordings on the hard drive. I hope this helps.

It is not possible to copy your DVR content to a PC, but using the Dish ViP 922 HD DVR you would be able to watch all your recorded shows on a PC, laptop, iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Blackberry, Android smart phone, etc... from just about anywhere.
