    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

There are two hypotheses as to when the oceans, including the Pacific Ocean, first formed. The oceans may have originated about 3800 million years ago, when Earth's surface conditions first allowed water to remain stable in its liquid phase. However, it is unknown whether this stability actually coincided with the formation of oceans.

The second hypothesis suggests that oceans formed approximately 4200 million years ago, based on the discovery of detrital zircons whose surface weathering indicates the presence of oceans.
