Going front to back ensures a cleaner wipe. Wiping back to front only spreads the risidual waste on to the bottom of your crotch.

Instead of dry-wiping, consider using one of the various hand sanitizers. You can also use the pre-moistened toweletts. Even better is use of a mild mouthwash. Instead of standard bathroom tissue you may have to use a small section of a soft paper towel but you'd be surprised at how much fecal matter dry-wiping leaves as opposed to wet-wipe. With wet-wiping it doesn't matter direction you choose to wipe in.

I think you must use water.

Moist towelettes used front to back until clean, followed by a few more towelettes back to front will do the job.

This is interesting stuff, but nobody asks the follow-up question: Don't most people who wipe from front to back reach around behind them, rather than go between their legs? If that's the case, how can it be more efficient. I mean it IS a bit of a reach. The most direct rout is obviously the better. I can understand why women do this, but why would a man? I love some of the answers they give, ranging from 'just because' to 'it'll give you prostate cancer'! I even heard a guy say its real gay to wipe between your legs instead of from behind. But it's kind of the opposite. The reason most men go from front to back is simple (even though it's a pain in the *) is because their mother taught them how to do it.

It's totally an individual choice. I've done both at one time or another in my life. I think reaching around from the side and starting the wipe from in front the anus, going back, is what I did from the earliest that I can remember. It's probably true what another member said about that being what our Moms taught us. I want to also add that when I started to change, it was because of the efficency of it, that is, how your underwear looks at the end of the day might dictate a new method is needed. Also, (I don't believe I'm getting this detailed!) what kind of BM you've just had may play into the method of wipe. Believe it or not, I could go into greater detail, but I'll spare us all.

Front to back... everyone should. It stops fecal matter spreading and stops diseases.

The way I learned in potty training some half a century ago. Front to back.

My 5 yr. old granddaughter has much difficulty reaching around behind her to wipe her bottom. I told her to stay sat on the potty and go between her legs wiping front to back at least 5 times, then wash her hands

It's best to just scoot your butt on the shag rug like a dog does....then, you dont have to worry about getting hands all nasty and such..
