    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

St. Catherine of Siena was born in 1347, and is the patron saint of fire prevention. She supposedly received visions from early childhood, dreaming at the age of 6 that Jesus came to her and blessed her. She died in 1380 and was canonized in 1461.

She was also the 24th of 24 children born to an impoverished Italian laborer and his wife. The nun that taught my first grade class had a reliquary that contained a fragment of one of her bones. At the time, it was fascinating and creepy.

At the time I visited her shrine in Italy, I thought she could have been a mystic, but she could have also been a lonely, neglected child, or both. She also could have been having hallucinations--hallmarks of major mental illness, say schizophrenia. From information obtained at her shrine, I thought she fit in the lonely soul, hallucinating category.

She also had some disturbing self-abuse rituals, as many saints did--'mortifying the flesh to bring one closer to God.'

Was she in communication with the Almighty? I don't know.
