It sounds like it is burning oil. This is usually caused by worn piston rings, pistons and cylinders.
Definitely burning oil. That black soot means you're killing the environment nevermind the people behind you when you drive. Get it fixed either by a mechanic or try a fuel additive that helps your piston rings. The fact that it's burning oil means you are rolling the dice with your engine. If it seizes due to lack of oil then it's done.

You're reading I had the oil changed on my car 4.5 months ago. 2 months ago the oil was down 3 quarts and there is no signs of a leak, and I had the oil changed. Now it seem down I-2 quarts and on long trips a black soot appears on the back bumper area. What is wrong?
