Addictive personalities and weakness. Some people need drugs, others alcohol, sex, gambling, religion, meds, you name it as long as they can have a crutch that helps thru the day without having to face reality

It genetic. The same way that some diseases and viruses dont affect everyone, the same applies to drug addiction. Addiction is also a result of how emotionally you are connected to drug use. If you use drugs when you are angry, upset, or have the need to release stress, more than likely your addiction will be connected to one of those emotions.

Some people have addictive personilities, they have a chemical imbalance in their brain. They do not know, when to quit and when to say no.

my parents never took drugs.I tried drugs in my younger days they did nothing for me so never took them again. I know my 4 children have tried them when they were younger and they did nothing for them and don't take them now,so it could have something to do with being hereditary.

I think it's a mixture of environmental factors (availability, peer pressure, etc.)

When it's easy to obtain and socially accepted by those around you, it's harder to view it as "taboo" or "bad" because it doesn't seem to be hurting anyone on a daily basis.

You become an addict when you lose the ability to to "say no". It can be heredity but anyone can become addicted no matter the family history, its a choice noone forces a pill down your throat and noone sticks the needle into your arm. There are many reason's why people become addicted and the most common I've seen is the inability to face reality and responsibility.

I've been instructed on this, and addiction IS hereditary. You don't become an addict just because you did a larger quantity of drugs or used drugs when you were stressed, sad, etc. From birth, addicts are predisposed with an "allergy" to drugs/alcohol. Either you have it, or you don't. If you have this "allergy", the body doesn't react to drugs the same way that a non-addict's body would....therefore, causing a craving to CONSTANTLY need drugs.

I think its all in your mind. I have tried several different drugs and drank all kinds of alcohol, but decided to stop one day around the age of 22, and never looked back. I am now 33. I was not addicted to these things, and never felt like I had to have it. As for hereditary, I don't think so, my sis died of overdose, several people in family use, and more drink. I think it is just being week minded. You have no will power or desire to quit.

tendencies, everyone has tendencies, and everyone has different urges and tendencies. you can get addicted to anything you like, t.v. eatting cutting smoking biting finger nails lying. The more people enjoy drugs the more they do them and the more they are likely to become addicts.

But what about the person that wasn't born with this "allergy" who becomes an addict? Any ideas on the reasons behind that?

All to do with the person i guess. Some people have an addictive personality and willpower comes into it a lot too.

As a former addict,I can say that I had to try drugs to find out if I liked them,I never tried one I didn't like.

Mother is an alcoholic, but I am the only one out of 4 kids, who has signs and past history of drug abuse.

Why did I end up the only one,who can say?Is it hereditary?I can't see it in my family(Maybe from mother to me?IDK)

If I never tried those drugs I did try, would there be evidence of addiction in me?Kind of hard to tell.

Many 'social' users can take it or leave it,I didn't fall into that category.

This question is an old one:) Some people believe it is genetic, physiological.
Many people are in denial about their addict status. They are addicted and addicted. They take one drug and counteract it with another.
    One drug begets another.
If you asked one addict and one non-addict what they would think about never being able to take another drug, the addict would not be able to comprehend the idea.

well I think its because of peers adn the pressure which is why a lot of bad things happen. It's the peers, watch the next one of your friends might be next.
