The modern spelling is pukulan. pukul in Indonesian/Malay means to strike. Thus, this is a martial arts form. It is difficult in many cases, to know just where things originate, either in Malaysia or Indonesia, because, you have to remember, these countries have only existed since WW2. Before the colonial period, native dynasties often straddled Sumatera and the Malay peninsula. Ethnically, culturally, linguistically both the islands and mainland Malaysia are very close. (Had European colonialisation not taken place, the Philippines would have been just as close )Pencak silat or pukulan is practiced throughout the islands in various forms, usually with a mystical element attached. Each island, each tribal group can recognise its own moves, but there have developed national styles as well.
Poekoelan is a rare Indonesian martial art, brought to this country in 1956 by Mas Goeroe Agoeng Willy Wetzel, and is best described as Compassionate Balanced Action. Poekoelan is a complete martial art, encompassing striking and kicking, ground fighting, highly effective self-defense, beautiful forms, animal movement, healing and breath work, weapons training, and free fighting. Poekoelan ("series of returning blows from hands and feet") Tjimindie ("beautiful flowing water") Tulen ("original") is a complete martial art system born out of a combination of the most powerful elements of Indonesian silat and Chinese Chun-Fa (Gong Fu).
