Why do so many white people want to be brown?

    I think it is a simple fashion choice sadly foisted upon the public by the fashion industry. Tanned has been pumped by the media as "healthy" and desirable, however, that is not so unless it is natural to you. For instance, the naturally pale Celts have amongst, or the highest, instance of skin cancer (I learned that in nursing school).

    What is considered desirable and "healthy" has changed through the ages. Paleness was desirable and healthy in various ages past and, I would guess, in some nations today.

    People who do not try to force an unnatural state on themselves, including a tan, are much healthier. I am from a brown skinned ethnicity and I know that, if I were to try to darken myself more than is normal, I would risk skin cancer and, in fact, just unprotected exposure in myself risks it... so I use sunscreens and watch for signs of melanomas.

    I do find it a bit ironic these days that it is still done due to 1) the current health consciousness, 2) the current ruckus over "brown" people. Of course, the tan a white person has does not tend to look like the skin color of someone of a "brown" ethnicity... the undertones are different.

    It's not like they want to be brown forever. You're talking about wanting to be tan. It's just a nice, healthy look.

    I guess it started with Coco Chanel when she popularized suntans in what the 1920's?...Prior to that white people wanted to be white (I assume because that was proof that they weren't labourers). There are also some very attractive people in all races...

    Because it looks good.

    It does follow trends however. In the past, someone with a tan would be assumed to be a manual labourer from the fields. Being white means you work indoors.

    Nowadays being tanned means you can afford a tanning salon or a holiday by the sea somewhere.

    Who knows, maybe the next trend will be brought on by Twilight, and to be very white means to be a vampire :)

    Not me. I'm happy just the way I am (white). And it's a damn shame I can't say I'm proud to be white without feeling like it may be racist....because it is not!

    Idiot skinheads and white supremacists have ruined that for us.

    Be yellow, brown, black, white...just be proud of who you are.
