  • The nickname fro France is Marianne, or rather, the nickname given to the feminine allegory of the Republic. Some people believed it came from the name of the Jesuit Mariana, the 16th century theoretician. Others thought it was the image of the wife of the politician Jean Reubell, basing their belief on an old date. For a full history of the origins and current status and meaning of Marianne, see http://www.info-france-usa.org/atoz/marianne.asp
  • My gosh! Being French, i never heard ANYBODY speak about France by saying "Marianne". It's more about the Republic itself. The only nickname i know is litteraly "The Human Rights' Country" (le Pays des Droits de l'Homme). It makes me laugh considering how bad immigrants are treated by our government nowadays here. It has got this nickname because The Human Rights Declaration has been written bby Frenchmen. We have the habit to say this nickname as American say "The land of the Free" i can't see any other nickname.
