The population of Ascension Parish, Louisiana is near 20,000 to 30,000 residents greater than the 2000 census (however that is often disputed). One of the major reasons for Ascension Parish's growth are the number of families taking their children out of the poor school system of East Baton Rouge Parish for the better Ascension school system, while Hurricane Katrina also brought in some residents from surrounding areas, Ascension Parish President Ronnie Hughes stated that the influx of hurricane victims, while once a large factor, has decreased and remain a small percentage of growth, he contributes Ascension's growth to natural growth.
