On St. Patrick's Day, the Irish remember the death of their patron with celebrations and drinks. It is tradition to use witty toasts to attract good luck or mock "enemies of Ireland." On St. Patrick's Day, it's an Irish tradition to wear green clothing, a shamrock--the traditional symbol of Ireland--and to raise a drink to make one or more of the known Irish toasts. St. Patrick's Day is celebrated with feasts and parades. On this day, many Irish will raise a beer with green food coloring and make a toast, saying, "Slainte," which means "to your health." Three St. Patrick's Day toasts are "May the enemies of Ireland never eat bread nor drink whiskey, but be tormented with itching without the benefit of scratching"; "A healthy heart and a wet mouth"; and "May you live as long as you want, and never want as long as you live." As the Irish are known for their wit, funny toasts abound, such as, "May the Good Lord take a liking to you, but not too soon"; "There are only two kinds of people in the world, the Irish and those who wish they were"; "Here's to being single, drinking doubles and seeing triple!" St. Patrick's Day is celebrated by people around the world; especially by Irish immigrants. Although it's not a national holiday in the United States, it is a recognized day. Many Americans head to the nearest Irish pub to find and drink a green beer and raise their glasses to make a toast.
