Question

Help answer this question below.

My condo association forbids installing a window air conditioner. I'd like to have a backup in case my central A/C ever fails. What solutions have other condo owners come up with (a unit mounted in the ceiling maybe)?

The portable ones on wheels, about 300 dollars at Home Depot.

I have a small window unit as a backup too,and have put it between my glass doors, venting to the lanai.

Use a small table, put some towels down, just incase of condensation..and close your lanai blinds..

Very little noise..and cheaper than the portable one.

Portable air conditoners are about your only other option. A portable A/C unit is a self-contained machine that collects the condensation in a plastic container or it can be exhausted through a nearby window using a window to air duct adapter. The range in price anywhere from $300 to over $1000.

You could also invent your own portable A/C unit by taking a standard small sized window air conditioner and sitting it inside of a trash can propping up the edges on a couple of 2x4's laying across the top of the can. It will blow cool air and the condesation will drain into the trash can.
