What do pirates mean when they say "Davy Jones' locker"?

    Arghhh, perfectly legitimate sailors use the term too, matey. It means the bottom of the sea, and ,by me bones, Davy Jones is the fiend that presides over all the evil spirits of the deep. Who the actual Davy Jones was, if there be one, is the question that fouls me anchor. Some sea dogs claim Davy came from Saint David, the patron saint of Welsh sailors and Jones be a corruption of the biblical seaman Jonah.Then there's them at sez Duffy is West Indian for ghost. Jonah spent a few days stored in a whale. A locker can a place to store things. So "He's gone to Davy Jones' locker" is "Ghost Jonah 'as him stored away." Others say a fiendish pub owner named David Jones used to incapacitate drinkers in his ale locker, and sell them to press gangs for duty aboard ships. Some lubbers claim Duffer Jones was a near sighted sailor who often found himself overboard. I say he'd 'ave to 'ave a patch over *both* eyes for that to 'appen very often, and them at claim that is the same as would spit to wind'ard. The theory that warms the cockles of this old heart is that Davy is the horned one himself, the Devil,aye. But then I 'ave a 'ook for a 'ead so me thinkin' be crookt, it be. It's a question as 'ard to fathom as the location of Jean LaFitte's treasure.
