My insurance company just paid me a generous settlement because a water leak got my carpet wet. The adjuster said the carpet is a total loss, but I see nothing wrong with it that can't be fixed. Should I really replace the carpet?

It's your money, do what you want with it. But it might not be your carpet. A really tight fisted mortgage company might make you replace it, since their collateral is now less the value of the carpet. But I doubt that. But if something else should ever happen to the carpet, you'll have to replace it yourself, the insurance company is not gonna pay to replace old carpeting they already paid to replace.. It would be worth while to hire a carpet cleaning company that speciallizes in flood and fire repair and cleaning. ( A fire usually gets a flood to put it out) There may be damage to the padding or backing that you can't see or feel.....yet. They can tell you what future damage may occur, maybe can prevent it. Don't hire or even get a free estimate from a company that also ( or only) sells or installs carpeting, they will primarily be interested in taking that insuarance money.

It depends on not just the carpet, but the padding underneath the carpet. A friend of mine had a similar situation to yours and she pocketed the money. Over time she noticed a really bad smell and it turns out that the cleaner she used didn't get all the way down into the padding under the carpet and mold was all over the padding, the underside of the carpet and the sub-flooring. Nasty. She did have to have the carpet replaced after all. So, as has already been said, it's your money. . .

No. You should not replace the carpet. You should refund the insurance company and tell them that they made a mistake.

I wouldn't bother. But why did you put in a claim if its ok? If it was part of a larger claim (ie your No Claims bonus is knackered anyway), I'd just pocket the money. They won't care.

Your insurance provider paid you a settlement proportionate to the damage they believed you incurred. If you choose not to spend it on replacing carpet but refurbishing for a lesser amount I believe you have the right and ethical choice. www.floodkings.com
