To test for blood sugar levels, a patient pricks their finger and applies a drop of blood to a test strip. That strip is inserted into the testing machine. What the machine is actually measuring is the color change to the testing strip. It's the strip that reacts to the blood sugar level. The machine just interprets the color change as a blood glucose level.
