Visit your email service provider's website. Look for a "Settings" or "Options" link or button. Find the account settings and see if there is an option like "Close Account." For example, in Gmail follow "Settings," then "Accounts and Import," then "Google Account Settings." Edit your services and you will be asked to confirm if you really want to delete your email account. Deleting your email address will wipe out all information related to that address, such as messages and contacts.
Click "Help" and type "close my account" in the search box. The Help response will provide instructions specific to your email service provider. For example, Yahoo! will take you to its "Account Termination" page, while Hotmail will refer you to the "Windows Live Account Overview" page, where you can choose to delete your account. Note that if your email account is part of a larger group of services from the same provider, such as Yahoo!, closing one account may terminate all the others as well.
