Why do you think bacteria is the smallest organism? There are many microorganisms much smaller than bacteria including nanobes ( 1/10 size of bacteria btw), and nanoarchaeums are considered to be the smallest microorganisms along with nanobes.

Mycoplasma genitalium is a parasitic bacteria and is the smallest known organism known to be capable of independent growth and reproduction. It is smaller than the bacteria chlamydia.
