    Russia received 17 gold, 12 silver and 9 bronze medals at the first World Air Games. With a total of 38, it received the most medals. Sponsored by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, or FAI, the first Games occurred in September 1997 in Turkey where 1,714 athletes represented 60 countries.
