Examine your disposal to ensure there is no debris in or near it. You have to turn the disposal on to sharpen the blades, and you don't want to make the mistake of accidentally grinding nonfood items or foods such as bones or pits, which can damage the blades.
Scoop up a handful of ice cubes, and drop them into the garbage disposal. Chop one small lemon into thin slices, and place them in the disposal as well. The lemon slices will deodorize the garbage disposal while you are sharpening the blades.
Turn on the faucet so that you have a steady stream of water entering the garbage disposal. Flip the power switch that turns your garbage disposal on. Do not turn the disposal on before this point because you can cut yourself if you are dropping objects into an engaged disposal. Allow the garbage disposal to run for about one minute or until you no longer hear a grinding sound.
