If the runner on first attempts to steal second, the fielder applies tag with ball in glove before runner reaches second, ball pops out of glove on tag and fielder catches ball in left hand, then what should be the call?

    That's a tough call, but I think the runner is safe. If the ball pops out while attempting a tag, then the tag is not completed. (This part would be umpire discretion whether the tag was completed).

    Assuimng the tag was not completed, when the fielder catches the ball with his throwing hand, he would need to tag the runner with that hand/ball to complete the tag and get the runner out.
