    The first psychiatric nurse, Linda Richards, started training nurses to work with psychiatric patients in 1882 when she founded the Boston City Hospital Training School for Nurses. Previously, there was no formal training for psychiatric nurses and people didn't like the idea of women caring for insane patients.
