My 1999 Corolla check engine light came on after an oil change. The car runs fine, but could the two events be related, and what do I do now?

Have you checked the oil level? (Just to be safe). The chances are that the two events are unrelated. If you have a '99, then I'd guess you also have the mileage to trip certain built-in timers or sensors which set those dreaded "check engine" lights off. If you were mechanically inclined I'd suggest going to an auto parts place and buying an OBD code reader to find out what the problem is and fix it or reset the code, but based on your question I'd say skip that and go to an auto shop to have it read and have the problem dealt with or the code reset.

You think the car is running fine? Yeah, in reality it probably is not. If you are around 50K in mileage I would be that one of your oxygen sensors if bad. Take it for a diagnostic check. This may still be under warranty to take it to a Toyota dealer. I took it to a local repair shop and paid $250.00 when I might have been able to get it for free on my 2001 Corolla.

if that's the engine oil light then it is normal.
When you flush the oil from the engine and ten replace it, the oil isn't everywhere until the oil pump indeed pumps it around the engine.
For a second there'll be no oil pressure.
You should not run the engine however.
You should run it for 25 seconds to give it a chance to circulate, then stop engine, give it a chance to settle down then check oil level and top up as necessary.

Check engine light has nothing to do with an oil change. The light is related with emission problems, such as a bad converter, sensors, ect. It need to be diagnosed at a shop.

Did you fill up with gas at a similar time? check that your gas cap is on securely before going to a mechanic.
