Situated on a wide bend in the Mississippi river, Nauvoo has most of the historic district in the lower flat lands that are only several feet above the water line. A prominent hill rises as one moves further east, and at its apex stands the rebuilt Nauvoo temple. Beginning with the temple the land continues flat for many miles eastward. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.5 km sq (4.8 square miles). 8.8 km sq (3.4 mi sq) of it is land and 3.7 km sq (1.4 mi sq) of it (29.88%) is water.
