On average, about 100 strands of hair (from the scalp) fall out per day. This is because the hair grows in cycles. Every cycle includes a long growing phase (anywhere up to 7 years) followed by a brief resting phase. At the end of this resting phase, the hair falls out and a new hair starts growing, which begins the whole cycle again.
