    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Choose a container that is no larger than 2 to 3 inches wider than the stalk of the bamboo (dracaena or lucky bamboo) plant. Fill the container ¼ full of stones, marbles or gravel. Work the stalk of the bamboo down the center of the stones, nearly to the bottom. Pour additional stones around the stalk for structure, a total of about 3 to 4 inches.

Pour approximately 1 inch of bottled water into the container. The roots of the bamboo stalk should always be covered in water. Check it often and replenish moisture, as needed. Place the bamboo plant in a lighted location, but not in direct sunlight, which will burn the leaves.

Wash out the container, the stones and the bamboo roots once a week. Pour out the water and rinse the stones in a fine meshed strainer. Wash the container with soap and water. Give the stones and container a final rinse, including the plant's roots, with fresh spring or bottled drinking water. Chlorine and fluoride in your tap water is harmful to bamboo.
