Madison is located in the center of Dane County in central southern Wisconsin, 77 miles west of Milwaukee, WisconsinMilwaukee. Madison is also located 122 miles northwest of Chicago. The city completely surrounds the smaller Madison (town), WisconsinTown of Madison, as well as the villages Maple Bluff, WisconsinMaple Bluff and Shorewood Hills, WisconsinShorewood Hills and the city of Monona, WisconsinMonona. Madison shares borders with its largest suburb, Middleton, WisconsinMiddleton, and three other communities, McFarland, WisconsinMcFarland, Sun Prairie, WisconsinSun Prairie, and Fitchburg, WisconsinFitchburg (which was a township before incorporating to forestall southern annexation by Madison). The city's boundaries also approach the villages of Verona, WisconsinVerona and Waunakee, WisconsinWaunakee. According to the United States Census Bureau, Madison has a total area of 219.3 km sq (84.7 square miles). 177.9 km sq (68.7 mi sq) of it is land and 41.5 km sq (16.0 mi sq) of it (18.91%) is water.
