According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.9 km sq (2.7 square miles). 6.5 km sq (2.5 mi sq) of it is land and 0.4 km sq (0.2 mi sq) of it (5.64%) is water. Named after its reputation during the logging age to be a resting place in the canals and locks. Thus, appropriately it became known as Lock Haven, a "haven in the locks".
