How do you classify the color of polka dots, by the dot or by the background color? For example, would a yellow bikini with white polka dots be considered white or yellow?

    Depends on the size and spacing of the dots, and what percentage of the total surface area of the garment they occupy. In most polka-dotted garments, the background color predominates (e.g. a "yellow bikini" "with white dots"). However, if the white dots are large enough to make the yellow between them look like an afterthought-- as is the case with many mod fabric patterns-- it would be more accurate to refer to the garment as being predominately white. Likewise, if there are many closely-spaced small white dots packed together, you'd go ahead and call it a "white polka-dotted bikini". If they are equally prominent, your best bet is to go with the background color since the "dot" is the detail.

    Either way, it's standard to refer to both the background color and the color of the dots when writing a description of a garment.
