On One Hand: Tomatoes Grow Well in Pots

Tomato plants have a habit of climbing, which makes it ideal for them to be planted in a very small space, like a container. Pots should be at least 10 inches in diameter and 12 inches deep. Tomatoes also need a lot of sun in order to bear an abundance of fruit. In cold and wet climates, bringing the container indoors in front of a sunny window will help coax it into fruiting well.

On the Other: Additional Support is Needed

Due to their habit of climbing, tomato plants should have some support other than the pot. The tall types of tomato plants should be given a supporting cane or pole of at least 3-feet high while the bush types will sprawl and some can be kept as hanging plants. Tomatoes grown in containers also need frequent watering, at least a couple of times a week, as container plants dry up very quickly.

    Bottom Line

Tomatoes are one of the easiest plants to grow in containers and will fruit very well as long as the vines are well-supported and the plant is kept in sunlight and watered often.
