Add peat moss when planting edible crops, regular plants or flowers, and/or to cover planted grass. Add peat moss to compost. Carefully open the store-bought peat moss package because it is sold compressed and will expand to twice its package size once opened.
Store-bought peat moss must be broken apart. Break the peat moss with hands or a grinder or a mulcher. Add the peat moss to the top six inches of the garden/lawn soil and create a one to two inch layer. Use a rototiller or a rake to mix the peat moss into the soil. Level the soil to a smooth surface and water the mixture until it is saturated.
