    Asker's Pick

Good question, I wish someone had filled me in on this when i was starting out. I don't know how you are playing exactly, but the elbow is bound to move a little bit if you're loose&warmed up. It should'nt be the driving force, though. To me the best way is using the wrist- not side to side wrist moves(the elbow tends to get too involved that way), but instead a rotating wrist like you're opening a doorknob. Then you tuck in your m, r, & pinky and clutch the pick not tight but firm(with your thumb joint providing resistance), using the doorknob motion to bounce back & forth for up&downstrokes. Also for leads you can maintain the same positioning while tucking your pick where it comes up from under the strings, still bouncing your wrist but keeping the muscles involved limited to the thumb and index finger as much as possible. It took me years to unlearn that tension-in-the-wrist thing, now sometimes I can literally play whatever I hear- the more limp the wrist the better. No, really...%^)

I play mostly with my elbow now.. I have been playing for 13 years.. The first three years I played mostly with my wrist.. I didn't force myself to start playing with my elbow, it just kind of happened. So don't think too much about it.
