1997 Ford Explorer brake pedal vibrates and engine will die if I dont pump the brakes?

Do the brakes work OK?
If so, it sounds like the engine is running very over-rich. Pumping the brakes allows slightly more air into the inlet manifold and momentarily leans the engine.

- I'm not kidding. Why would you think that?
  The other possibility is that the vacuum hose has become detached from the intake manifold, but pumping the brakes in that situation would not rescue a dying engine.
