Older BIOS instructions are stored on Read-Only Memory chips and cannot be modified. The only way to update ROM BIOS instructions is to replace the chip, which usually isn't too difficult but the precise strategy depends on your BIOS manufacturer and chip type.
Most modern BIOS programs are installed on a Flash-like variant of ROM called EEPROM, and can actually be modified or replaced by software; this is called "flashing the BIOS." Flashing isn't the easiest thing in the world, but it's easier, more convenient and cheaper than physically replacing the BIOS chip.
It's easier to modify an EEPROM BIOS than a simple ROM one. The good news is that EEPROM chips are now nearly ubiquitous. For details on how to update both ROM and EEPROM BIOS programs, try the guides linked in the "Resources" section.
