My answer is outside of the church for the majority of the UK church does not believe that Hell currently exists. Modern church thinking is that Hell will only come into being towards the end of our universe.
Until 1973 it was accepted that when Jesus was crucified he went into Hell. Once in Hell he either conquered it or re-programmed it so that he, not Satan, decides who goes to Hell, how long they stay and what punishment they receive.
Satan is the personification of lust. He started off as the god of procreation but, through personality, became greed. He is addiction.
'Evil' is a general term that simply means the opposite of Good. The personification (god of) Evil would therefore be Lucifer. Think about The Creation for a second. One minute there was nothing, just eternity. The next there was something - The Creation. Frankly the creation should not have been there, but it was. "Evil" was (and is) eternity's safeguard to close down such anomalies. Lucifer was eternity's response to The Creation. He has only one job to do. He is there to end all life and close down the anomaly of The Creation.
If a person is 'evil' then that person is driven to end the life of others. While that person ended lives then Lucifer would use him. Once that person could no longer end lives, Lucifer would find a way to end his.

Satan is an embodied concept that represents complete and total disconnection. Satan is not a literal being, but if a person becomes completely disconnected from all sentient beings, and he no longer believes any other sentient beings are sentient; then he becomes the concept of Satan unto himself and creates his own personal hell.
