Humidifiers add moisture to your home's air. This can alleviate some uncomfortable health conditions including dry skin and lips, nosebleeds and cold symptoms such as coughing. The Mayo Clinic recommends using humidifiers to maintain a humidity level in your home of between 30 and 50 percent.
You must properly care for humidifiers. If you do not keep the filters and water tanks clean, mold and bacteria can grow. Humidifiers may spread spores and bacteria through the air in your home, which is especially bad for people with asthma or allergies. Lung infections may even result from the airborne particles.
Humidifiers can be good for your home and health, as they make the inside air more comfortable and less drying. However, they can be very bad for your health if you do not follow a regular cleaning schedule. The Mayo Clinic recommends that humidifiers be cleaned at least once every three days.
