How does one dispose of a plastic trash can?

The problem I had when I wanted to throw away my trash can was that the collectors wouldn't take it even when I put a sign on it that said "take this can". My final resolution was to cut the plastic can into smaller pieces and put the pieces in a bag with the rest of the trash.

It has been my experience that if you fill the can to the top and then meet the collectors upon their arrival they will have no problem with taking the can at your request.
