A sod cutter is very similar looking to a shovel and works in a similar manner. However, the edges of a sod cutter are different.
Both edge sides of a sod cutter are different. One side is beveled and the other side is serrated. The beveled edge prevents the sod cutter from penetrating deeply into the lawn, while the serrated edge cuts through the grass roots.
Sod cutters work by digging the edge of the blade under the chunk of grass that is to be removed.
The design of the sod cutter makes it easier to wedge the blade under the turf than a regular garden shovel. Rocking the blade helps to dislodge the sod and easily remove it.
Landscaping professionals have access to mechanical sod cutters. These machines are powered by gas or electricity. They have many blades which cut through the sod and the machine often removes the sod and rolls it.
