  • It varies. Some have been released before they have even arrived home. some are not released for a few days. Personally, I was released within about six hours after arriving at the Vancouver airport.
  • It depends on the situation. Some missionaries may have family come out to the field to meet them at the end of their missions. In this case the missionary and their family will often tour the mission as the missionary show his/her family places of interest and places they served. In this case the missionary may receive a release from his/her mission president. In most cases, however, the missionary is released by his/her stake president upon returning home. So, it depends on when they can get an appointment with their stake president. In my case it was a few hours after I got home. (Note, even if the missionary is released in the field, he/she must still report to their stake stake president for a final release once they do get home.)
  • Standard protocol is to not release the missionary until he or she has arrived home and reported to the stake president, even when family members meet them in the mission "field."
