Actually Merrick wrote his autobiography in 1884. After spending four years in the Leicester Union Workhouse, he was able to sign on with a showman named Sam Torr and tour professionally as "The Elephant Man." It was a lucrative career and he was treated well until public complaints of indecency shut down the shows in 1886.
