    On One Hand: IP Addresses Are Tracked.

    Every computer with an Internet connection has a unique IP address (short for Internet protocol address). It is common practice for companies to track IP addresses when their customers register products online. Companies usually collect this information for marketing and customer service purposes.

    On the Other: Privacy Policy Issue.

    IP addresses are considered private information. Companies that collect private information must have a privacy policy informing customers how their information will be used. If you do not agree with or are uncomfortable with a company's privacy policy, you should avoid using the company's products and/or services. Also, since all servers your computer contacts on the Internet will record your computer's IP address, you should avoid Internet contact with any companies you do not want to have your private information.

    Bottom Line

    Companies track IP addresses when you register a product online. But companies that collect private information must have a privacy policy informing their customers of what that information can be used for.
