Question

Help answer this question below.

In SC, I moved out before my lease was up and had a verbal agreement with the landlord to sublet until the lease expired. Now, she won't let the new tenant move in and told me I have to pay the rent. What can I do to enforce the verbal agreement?

NEVER do verbal agreements. They dont hold up in court. IF your landlord told you this .. find a new place . if hes not professional get out.

All you can do is ask the landlord why she will not let the new tenant move in or ask what you can do to rectify the situation.

In most states when a written agreement contradicts a verbal agreement, its the written agreement that stands. If your lease states that there will be no subletting and you are responsible for the balance of the lease if you move out then you are pretty much stuck having to pay the rent.

Its unfortunate that people will tell you anything in order to not have to deal with you only to go back on what they say and use what they can against you.

    Good luck!
