  • From what I could glean from the web, lemons have been available to western civilization longer than other citrus fruits. Lemons can be "cured" and stored for months, where other citrus fruits cannot. I'd imagine that lemonade was invented a long, long time ago to make the unpalletable juice of the lemon more tasty. Sugar was valuable, but available in the middle ages in Europe, and that is apparently where lemonade originated. Other fruit juices are (usually) 100% fruit juice. Lemonade is not - it is made with juice of the lemon, water, and sugar. Pink lemonade has red grape juice added for color. ReaLemon brand lemon juice is juice, with some small amount of preservatives. It is CRAZY sour unmixed, and can be used to make lemonade (indeed, I remember seeing recipes for lemonade on the label, but I bought it for making cocktails ;-)
  • To add to the other answer, the word lemonade was first recorded in English in 1663 and comes from the French word Limonade. The "-ade" suffix in French is commonly used to denote a noun formed as a result of doing something. Most of the English words ending in "-ade" come from the French (blockade, promenade, serenade, etc.) http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=lemonade&searchmode=none http://www.utdallas.edu/~duym/suffixes.htm
