I'm just wondering what took them so long. It's a problem that's way out of hand, the federal government won't do anything about and the states have every right to enforce their laws and if people don't like it, they have every right to leave. It's time that we stop pandering to these criminals and give them what they deserve, a one way ticket home.

I think more States will follow the lead of Arizona..

Yes, but only after putting myself in the shoes of those who live next to the border. The stories of all the crime, drug running, murders, theft, property damage, and even instances of their cattle being killed. Families there are just sick of living in fear, and had wanted something done for a long time. And besides, the immigration status can only be checked if that person is engaging in a crime or suspected of commiting one.

Against it. First, it is very discriminatory and unfair. I know that most of you condone that. However, here's the other problem and the biggest and the one that y'all, whether you're a racist or not, should worry about: that law will open the door for the government to demand that ALL citizens (no matter what the nationality and immigration status) carry ID on their person. Those who do not comply will then be fined and/or incarcerated just as they do when someone is driving a vehicle without a license. I've said this before but if you want to see how well this works and at what scale, talk to any Cuban and they'll tell you how Castro was able to keep a population of 12 million peole at check with that simple little law.

But, hey, y'all continue being happy and jumping for joy on your racist bliss. It won't be long till the tables are turned on you. So enjoy it while you can!

I am absolutely FOR the Arizona immigration law. The Feds have been ignoring the problem for decades and something must be done. PS..This has nothing to do with disliking Mexicans. Mexico has an illegal immigration problem too (theirs is from the south part of their border) and their laws against illegal immigration are far harsher than ours!

  • No. To be fair, let's suppose there's another law. If you are caught speaking ENGLISH in Arizona, three husky Hispanic-American officers will grab you and throw you in the armored wagon. If you can't produce proof of your US Citizenship, you will be deported to Australia without a trial, and left to find your own way home. Oh you're not Australian? Tough shit, you were caught speaking English, that's all we need to know. Think it's far fetched? 1) Look at the Arizona law and what it does to legal Americans who are caught speaking Spanish. 2) Look at the fact that Hispanics are now or will soon be the majority in Arizona, Texas, New Mexico and California, and can and will be making the laws. 3) What goes around comes around.

Yes, I'm for it. And for all of you folks that don't live in AZ, it's sort of hard that you can't understand this.
You don't see the destruction of our once beautiful deserts, or the fact that you can't get a job because there are illegals willing to work for cash (uh duh, no paper trail)....or the fact that no matter where you go...spanish is the main language...instead of our countries national language! Even those "legally born mexican Americans" will speak in spanish in the workplace, when some of them can speak better english then us at times!
I'm fed up with it all. If your so hard-up to come to this country, do it LEGALLY! I will welcome you with open arms!
And one more thing...I am now hearing how wonderfully arogant these people are in their protests...saying they will pick up their shovels, picks, whatever, and turn them on us....yeah, that's real mature...a sure way to get your asses out of this country faster, or in jail...whatever is easier.
Don't threaten the white folk....we've never taken kindly to that, from you, or anyone else....

How can anyone be against a law that requires inforcement of the federal law? I do not understand how this is even worth debating. The state law allows for anyone breaking a law, that can not prove who they are, which means you don't have a US ID(Citizen) or Visa/Green Card, temporary or permament to have there immigration status. THIS IS ALL READY A LAW

Those against this law obviously have no regard for the law of this country, just look at the antics of the demonstrators, listen to their ugly remarks, and note how they have to lie, exagerate, and twist their tales of woe.

What kind of people would call for the burning of Phoenix?

bagicide stayed 10 months too long

I haven't had the opportunity to read the bill, so I can't personally attest to what is in it. I think we have to be very careful about judging something based on what we are told that it says. You can spin something to be what its not, you know what I mean? But I don't know where I would get a copy of the bill to read it, and I'm not a lawyer, so I might read it incorrectly.

From what I heard last night, and again, remember that this might be spin, an officer of the law has to have legal contact with the person first, that is, the person has to have broken a law first, then the officer has to be certain that the person is here legally. It is kind of like the seat belt law in some states. Officers aren't allowed to pull someone over for not having a seat belt on, but if they break another traffic law, like speeding, then they get cited for the lack of a seat belt too. If this is indeed the case, then the officer can't just stop someone for looking Hispanic and demand papers. The person in question will have to be pulled over for speeding, or have broken into a store or something first, and then in the course of booking or writing the citation, the officer will have to demand ID. And from what I heard last night, a driver's license is sufficient. If you are pulled over for speeding, you'd better have your driver's license whether you are Hispanic or not. You can get in a heck of a lot of trouble for being white and 17th generation American and speeding without your license in your pocket. I've seen fines as high as $600 in our local paper for just that, along with not wearing a seat belt.

From what I can see, if I'm hearing correct information, this law is a tempest in a teapot. This law isn't really doing anything but restating what is already on the books elsewhere, probably for legal purposes. Hispanic or not, we already have to have a driver's license on our person if we are pulled over for breaking a traffic law. Don't forget, this law may just as easily catch a British citizen who is in the country illegally, and I've known a few of those. A police officer already has to make a reasonable attempt to determine your ID and citizenship status at booking for another crime. My guess is they were trying to close a loophole in the law for court purposes by stating this plainly. But never underestimate the power of the media to stir something up into a huge controversy on a slow news day. That is their stock in trade and their way to deliver a captive audience to their advertisers.

Now, I'm not saying that there won't be some police officers who will take this as a license to harass Hispanics. There are always a few rotten apples. But remember, this is already on the books. They already have the license to do this. They can already pull someone over for having a tail light out, or being 1 mph over the speed limit, and demand to see the person's license, registration and proof of insurance. And in fact, being white and 17th generation American myself, I've been the victim of just that behavior. I worked for Domino's Pizza back in the days of the $3.00 off 30 minute guarantee in a town where there was a police officer who hated Domino's drivers and wanted to wipe us off the face of the earth. I don't speed. I never have. But cars will pick up speed without you realizing it on a downhill slope and he knew that. So he used to wait on downhill slopes and pull over anyone with a Domino's sign on their car who was 1 mph over the speed limit. I got 2 tickets from him before I learned his game and started putting downhill 5 mph under the speed limit with every other car passing me or honking at me (he never pulled them over). It isn't fun. I hated that man, and I know it isn't Christian for me to say that. He had an unreasonable prejudice against young people trying to make a living, even if we weren't doing anything wrong. But it didn't take a new law to facilitate him doing that. He was doing that more than 20 years ago, with no prejudicial law on the books against Domino's drivers. He just manipulated the laws in existence to go after us. This new law doesn't really give the police any new ammunition, and an officer who wants to behave in that fashion doesn't need this law to harass Hispanics. My guess is that the law they had wasn't stated clearly enough and was leaving a loophole somewhere. Given the fact that a rancher was just murdered in Arizona in his own backyard by someone who walked across the border, they probably wanted to make sure that loophole was closed before they caught him.

Have you ever seen the movie "A Day Without Mexicans"? Without illegals the economy would pretty much grind to a halt.

Illegal immigrants are like Wal-Marts. Americans complain about them yet continue to use them because we're too cheap to walk the walk.

A basic mandate of the Federal government is to enforce contracts and defend the shores.
Immigration policy should be admistered at the border, not at the schoolhouse, hospital or statehouse door. If you don't like the way the immigration laws are being applied contact your Congressman. But be prepared for the cost of goods and services to go up.

If you want a real fix change the law so that everyone born in the United States is not a citizen. We are one of the few countries that has such a law and it is an outdated reminent of our expanionist past.

Against. It puts great pressure on the police to actively find check that people are carrying their documentation of citizenship. It is invasive and if the police don't follow through to someone's satisfaction a citizen can sue. Americans should not be going to prison because they forgot their wallet and should not be subject to interrogation at the whim of a police officer.

For it. The cost of providing services for illegal immigrants is outrageous. http://kevincolby.com/2008/07/27/the-cost-of-illegal-immigrants-to-the-american-taxpayer/ The "new" law just supports what was already in place. With approximately 100,000 "illegal" immigrants having already left Arizona....it's working.

I agree with the majority of supporters of the law that the U.S. must enforce its laws, however, the big thing that bothers me is that this is mostly targeted at any Hispanic or Latino that looks like an immigrant. When people think of illegal immigrants the first thought is "Mexicans" not "Europeans", "Asians" etc. Sure, the majority are Mexican because they're at our borders, but so are Canadians and we don't worry about them smuggling anything in because, hey, they're not Mexican.

The "reasonable suspicion" seems like an open approval of racial profiling. Law enforcement has a bad reputation for enforcing the laws Too Much sometimes. Unfortunately, this is one of those laws that can be enforced to the extreme. I'm all for making The U.S. drug free, but we have t0 be careful of how we do it. Not ALL immigrants are bad, only a few.
It's unfortunate that the bad things that SOME do creates a bad image of ALL others.

  • I'm going to add another answer to this thread, based on having read the bill, via the link provided by my2cents in the comment thread for my answer. Now, I'll say up front that I am not a lawyer. I also didn't read every word in the bill, but I read carefully through at least 3/4 of it. That was enough for me to see that there was a whole lot in that bill that no one is talking about. Page 1, lines 37 through 39 say that a driver's license, non-operator ID card or tribal ID card are sufficient. You already have to have a driver's license on you to drive, so it isn't like you are going to get caught out buying ice cream with your kid and get deported, unless you didn't bring your wallet to buy the ice cream.

The bill expressly states on page one, line 32, that it may not be applied based on race. That means it could just as easily be used to determine the nationality of a British or Irish citizen as a Mexican citizen. Lets not forget that the illegal immigrants pouring across the Mexican border are not only Mexican. I know of immigrants in my community from Guatemala and Honduras, as well as Mexico.

Beginning on page 4, the bill contains language designed to make it easier to prosecute coyotes, the very people who are abandoning immigrants in the desert to die. The bill makes it a class 2 felony to bring a minor child into the country without an adult family member. Who out there thinks it is okay for a coyote to bring a child into the country with no family? Raise your hand and be counted!

It seems to me that this bill is also doing some things to protect the illegal immigrants from harm by coyotes who are paid to bring people into the country for nefarious purposes. But I don't hear the media talking about that, do you? You know the old saying about "Don't assume, it makes and ass out of you and me?" I would extend that to say "Don't trust the media, it makes an ass out of you and me." Go read the bill and see if you still believe what the media is saying.

totally against it. Of course some americans are for it. when they have never have had to live the way mexicans do. How many americans can say that they have had to worry about having food on the table. and im growing tired of this 'speak english' crap. english wasn't the first language here. it was first the indians language. but did you come here legally? no you barged into america in ships and instead of learning the language of the indians, you killed them all(when it was their land). And now you feel mexicans are being unfair for being here and speaking spanish? thats a bunch of bull!

obvious arizona is not financially ready to move all the illegal mexicans out, knowing that all the legal mexicans will start boycotting. 1/2 of arizona is mexicans, probably more than half. how is the economy there going to keep flowing when the majority of the people who wasted money over there left? Until the law gets rejected at the supreme court, and brewer admits she was dumb, arizona will keep lowering in debt...

I am for it and here is why, Phoenix Arizona is the number 2 city in the world for kidnapping, and it is caused by illegals. The American governments number one job is not to fix the environment, or create jobs, or the provide health care coverage, or what ever progressive ideology Obama has in mind. It's number one job is to protect it's citizens. The government refuses to do that so Arizona has to do it for themselves. Soon We all will be having to do the same thing.

LOVE IT!! I believe it is a great thing. Illegal immigrants know they are breaking the law by coming here without proper papers. Why do you think they try sneaking over and running from border patrol?? Tell me what country you could go to illegally and not get in trouble?? Theres not one!! This is not a racial issue. And what makes the President of Mexico think he has the right to come into OUR country and criticise anything??? Thats such bullshit!!! Anyways, I'm all for the law!! GO ARIZONA!! WOOT WOOT!!! I hope we get in here in Texas!!! :)

I think some of us are a little to over zealous in supporting this law, does immigration need to be solved, yes. Is this law going to solve it? I would say first of all the basics of this law need to be evaluated. You can be stopped if you look remotely latino, and arrested if you don't have immigration papers on your person.

For all those supporting this, I would say you might not understand the implications of this law for our country as a whole, short term for Arizona natives, they might be happy, long term for the country as a whole, quite frankly how would you feel if you were stopped because of the way you looked and couldn't provide immigration papers. I'm Italian so this might have an effect on me. This law is not something you want in the long term and can and will be abused. Already its turned Arizona into a Police State, like it or not, thats what it is.

The last thing I am going to say is where is your empathy? In fact your humanity? I feel we in the USA have been desensitized with all our materialism. Here, all middle class American parents have to worry about is what car they're getting for their childs Sweet Sixteen, In Mexico its about getting enough clean water and food for your family. My point is, on the topic of immigration you have to look at through the lens of "what would I do if I was in their position?" In other words look at this question then consider what it means to be human.

Actually "profiling" is a good thing. Law officers do that every time they go after a bank robber.
I have been deer hunting with my dad several times and a person not knowing anything about deer, a physical discription like size, weight, color, in short the profile of a deer, is far more likely to kill somebody's cow.
