A .50 caliber muzzleloader is a powerful weapon that is certainly capable of taking down a large elk, even at great distances. Because of the typical range of elk in the wild, elk hunting often requires hunters to make long shots and thus, a powerful gun is necessary to ensure a humane kill.
Muzzleloaders differ from centerfire rifles in a number of ways but when it comes to elk hunting, the most important consideration is the fact that they aren't as accurate over long distances. A bullet fired from a typical, long-range centerfire rifle will resist wind drift and drop in less of an arc, compared to a muzzleloader.
While the .50 caliber muzzleloader is indeed powerful enough to kill an elk humanely, the accuracy of the shot over the long distances generally associated with elk hunting must be considered. An ethical hunter must be certain of his or her ability to make a clean, humane kill and therefore, a more suitable, centerfire rifle should be used.
